Wellington High School Partners with WSU Tech to Launch Kansas, Choose Aerospace Program

Wellington, KS – July 24, 2024 – Wellington High School is excited to announce a new partnership with Wichita State University Campus of Applied Sciences and Technology (WSU Tech) to offer students a unique opportunity to earn a Technical Certificate in Aviation General through the Kansas, Choose Aerospace program. This program, starting in August 2024, sets students on a path to obtaining their A&P (Airframe and Powerplant) license and eventually an AMT (Aviation Maintenance Technician) degree from WSU Tech.

"The demand for AMT mechanics continues to grow,” said Dr. Sheree Utash, President of WSU Tech. “The Kansas Choose Aerospace program is a crucial step in addressing that need and building the talent pipeline our state’s aviation companies need. We are grateful to Senator Moran and the State of Kansas for their significant investment in our students' futures, enabling us to prepare the next generation of aviation professionals."

Students enrolled in this two-year program will benefit from the expertise of both trained high school faculty and WSU Tech faculty. The classes will be taught at Wellington High School, ensuring accessibility for local students. Students may begin as early as their junior year of high school and this initiative offers tuition and fees covered.

Wellington High School Principal John Nance said, “We're thrilled to partner with WSU Tech and AAR to bring the AMT (Aviation Maintenance Technology) program to our students. This program offers a fantastic chance for students to gain valuable skills and a license that can open doors to high-paying jobs in the aviation industry. It's also a great way to meet a community need by preparing students for in-demand careers.”

This program is made possible thanks to $1 million in federal resources secured by Kansas Senator Jerry Moran. Upon completion, graduates will have potential career opportunities with AAR Corp in Wellington, paving the way for a prosperous career in aviation maintenance.

Wellington High School students who are interested in enrolling should contact their school counselor for more information at [email protected], [email protected], or by phone at 620-326-4310.

Students must be enrolled by August 16th. You can find more information about WSU Tech’s aviation programs at www.wsutech.edu/aviation.
