Dr. Jen Kern Retiring from USD 353

Dr. Jen Kern's journey through education has been marked by a passion for learning and a commitment to student success. It all began at KSU (her family bleeds purple), then Black Hills State University, where she studied elementary education. She received her bachelor's from Wichita State University, finishing her student teaching experience.  This laid the foundation for a fulfilling career alongside her husband in Maize, where she taught kindergarten and he taught industrial technology.

Teaching kindergarten for 13 years, Dr. Kern's dedication to her students and innovative teaching methods became evident. This passion for integrating technology into education led her to transition into a role as a technology integration specialist, eventually becoming the district's technology integration facilitator. Alongside these roles, she pursued her master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction, channeling her expertise into authoring four curriculum books for TCM.

Her thirst for knowledge and professional growth didn't stop there. Dr. Kern pursued and completed her administrative certification through Fort Hays State University, culminating in her appointment as the principal at Maize Virtual Preparatory School. This role reflected her deep interest in technology and virtual instruction, a theme that continued to shape her career.

She then completed her doctorate in Leadership through Baker University, writing her dissertation on blended learning.

Driven by a desire to contribute closer to her hometown, Dr. Kern took on the position of Curriculum and Technology Director in Wellington KS, quickly rising to the role of assistant superintendent within her second year. Her leadership and strategic vision have been instrumental in shaping the educational landscape of Wellington USD 353, where she has proudly served for seven years.

Superintendent Adam Hatfield said, “Dr. Kern has been an invaluable asset for USD 353 for the past 7 years.  Our district was very lucky that she chose to bring her talents here.  Her passion for learning, teaching, curriculum and instruction now bleeds into everything we do as a district.  Her advocacy for the best possible outcomes for our students has shown up every step of the way.  We wish her a very happy retirement along with lots of well deserved time with her family.”

As Dr. Kern embarks on the next chapter of her life in retirement, her legacy of dedication, innovation, and commitment to educational excellence will continue to inspire colleagues, students, and the community. Dr. Kern has been working in education for 33 years. Her passion for teaching and technology will remain alive as she plans to share her expertise by teaching online for Fort Hays State University, further enriching the educational experiences of future educators.

Dr. Kern’s last day with the district will be June 30, 2024.
