Lyric Cornejo Crowned 2023 Duchess

Congratulations to Lyric Cornejo! She was crowned 2023 Duchess at Friday night's Homecoming football game. Her escort was Gavin Witham. The other candidates were Kate Haines, Sheadyn Stewart, Blaire Vazquez, and Olivia Smith. Lyric Cornejo is the daughter of Airily and Jesse Cornejo. She is the granddaughter of Allan Roths and the late Paula Ramsey, and Terri Cornejo and Marty Cornejo. Lyric has been a member of NHS for 3 years, SCCDAT for 2 years, and Pep Club for 2 years. She has also participated in tennis for 4 years, basketball for 2 years, and been a boys’ tennis manager for 3 years. She has been on the principal’s honor roll, and has received all-league honorable mentions for tennis in 2021 and 2022. In addition to that, Lyric placed 4th at state tennis in 2021, and 5th in 2022. Outside of school, she is also a member of the Wellington Catholic Church. After high school, she plans to attend cosmetology school and become licensed to do hair. Kate Haines is the daughter of Ashley Schwandt and Jared Haines. She is the granddaughter of Leah and Keith Schwandt, and Debbie and the late Glenn Haines. She has been a member and served as an officer of Student Council for 4 years, FFA for 3 years, and NHS for 3 years. She has also been a member of SCCDAT for 3 years, SADD for 3 years, Pep Club for 3 years, and been a class officer for 4 years. In addition, Kate has participated in cheer for 1 year, softball for 4 years, and been a Crimson Dancer for 4 years. Outside of school, Kate coaches youth basketball and softball teams for the local rec center, volunteers and fosters for the Wellington Humane Society, and works at Arrowhead Animal Clinic. She has been on the superintendent’s honor roll, received an all-league honorable mention for softball in 2023, and was a Junior Lions Club award recipient in 2023. Kate’s future plans are to attend Oklahoma State University, majoring in zoology on a pre-veterinary track, then go to Kansas State University, where she will earn her doctorate degree in veterinary medicine. Olivia Smith is the daughter of Traci Smith and Ryan Smith. She is the granddaughter of Brenda and Richard Cochran, Robin and Jeff Davis, and Kent Smith. Olivia has been a member of NHS for 3 years, Student Council for 2 years, Pep Club for 2 years, and SCCDAT for 2 years. She has also been a cheerleader for 3 years. During her junior year she interned at Wellington Middle School with the school psychologists, and this year she is interning with a speech language pathologist at multiple preschools in Wellington. Outside of school, Olivia enjoys dogsitting, water skiing, babysitting, and working at Big Cheese. She has been on the assistant principal’s honor roll and is involved in leadership class. After high school, Olivia plans to attend a junior college to continue her academic and cheerleading career. She hopes to become a speech language pathologist. Olivia was escorted by Trent Langford

Sheadyn Stewart is the daughter of Christina and Shay Stewart. She is the granddaughter of LaNee and Fernando Reyes, and Bobbie and the late Leon Stewart. Sheadyn has been a member of FFA for 3 years, Pep Club for 2 years, and SADD for 3 years, with one year being on the leadership committee. She has also participated in powerlifting for 3 years, softball for 2 years, volleyball for 1 year, and been a football manager for 1 year. Sheadyn received her Chapter Degree in FFA, as well as reaching the 500lb club and being a 3rd place state medalist two years in a row for powerlifting. Outside of school, she is a little league basketball coach and interns at the Wellington Humane Society. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends, and working with animals. Sheadyn’s future plans are to attend Wichita State University and major in veterinary medicine. Sheadyn was escorted by Hunter Worley.

Blaire Vazquez is the daughter of Halie Vazquez and Gabriel Vazquez. She is the granddaughter of Robin and Tom Tompkins, and Mary and Dennis Johnson. Blaire has been a member of Pep Club for 3 years, NHS for 1 year, SCCDAT for 1 year, leadership class for 1 year, and is currently interning at Eisenhower Elementary School. She has been on the assistant principal’s honor roll. Outside of school, Blaire is a member of the Wellington Methodist Church, where she is a part of their youth group and works in the nursery. Blaire often spends her time babysitting, having movie nights with friends, and hanging out with her sisters. Blaire's escort was Kaeden Gill.

 

Child Attendants

Addison Jenkins is the daughter of Kaylee and Ryan Jenkins. She is the sister of Wrigley Jenkins, and another baby brother on the way! Addi is the granddaughter of Jennifer and Aaron Hines, and Amy and the late Clyde Jenkins. She is a first grader at Washington Elementary. Addi plays for the Kansas Explosion softball team, and is on the Showstarz dance team. She also enjoys playing outside. Addi’s favorite ice cream flavor is chocolate, with a lot of whipped cream on top! When she grows up, she wants to be a veterinarian.

Denver Ault is the son of Jennifer and Jason Ault. He is the brother of Dakota Ault. Denver is the grandson of Liz and the late Jim Ramsey. He attends kindergarten at Kennedy Elementary. Denver is a member of First Christian Church and participates in Sunday school, children’s church, and Wednesday night fellowship. His hobbies include playing with his toy tractors, watching the Broncos, reading with his mom, playing outside with his sister, and singing. Denver’s favorite ice cream flavor is chocolate. When he grows up, he wants to be a farmer like his Papa.
