Cornejo crowned Duke

The Winter Homecoming Coronation was held this past Friday at the conclusion of the boys varsity game against Circle, and senior Jax Cornejo was crowned Duke!  Jax joins Heidi Gulick, who was previously crowned during Fall Homecoming, as the 2022-2023 Duke and Duchess of Wellington High School.
 
Below are the biographies of Jax and his fellow candidates for Duke.
 
Jax Cornejo is the son of Airily and Jesse Cornejo. He is the grandson of Allan Roths and Paula Ramsey, and Terri and Mardie Cornejo, and the great-grandson of Jessie Cornejo. He is the brother of Lyric and Cruz Cornejo. Jax has been a member of tennis for 4 years, scholar’s bowl for 4 years, FCA for 4 years, NHS for 3 years, and theater for 3 years. He volunteers at the Wellington Humane Society, and works at Crestview Country Club. He placed 6th at state in tennis his sophomore year, and 4th his junior year, as well as being a 2-time league champion tennis player. Other honors include receiving the USTA Junior Male Sportsmanship Award and the Junior Lions Club Award. After high school, Jax plans to attend the University of Kansas and major in interior architecture. He hopes to one day run his own interior design company. Jax was escorted by Duchess Heidi Gulick.
 

Keaton Hartman is the son of Kelli and Kent Hartman. He is the grandson of Sherri and Bob Dalbom, and LuAnn and Harold Hartman. Keaton has been a member of baseball for 4 years, basketball for 3 years, Crusader Radio for 2 years, NHS for 2 years, FCA for 2 years, debate for 1 year, and powerlifting for 1 year. He also plays club baseball for 316 Elite. He was named First Team All-League for baseball his junior year. Keaton’s future plans are to play baseball at Butler County Community College and pursue a degree in finance. Keaton was escorted by Duchess candidate Emma Stover.


Cope Henry is the son of Lonna and Ross Bartelson, and Ellen and Kade Henry. He is the grandson of Linda and Jim Turley, Tammy and Larry Bartelson, Marlinda and L.D Henry, and Ronda and Rick Blattner. He is the brother of Cadyn, Kyler, and Rigg. Cope has been a member of football for 4 years, basketball for 4 years, baseball for 4 years, and Pep Club for 2 years. He also plays summer baseball with the Chisholm Trail Tigers, and coached Rec basketball. He has received Honorable Mention All-League wide receiver and safety for football. His future plan is to study agronomy at Fort Hays State University. Cope was escorted by Duchess candidate Jensen Lynnes.


Hudson Lawrence is the son of Stephanie and Brady Lawrence. He is the grandson of Linda and Jim Yates, and Peggy and Richard Lawrence, and is the great grandson of R.D Lawrence. He is the brother of Caden Lawrence. He has been a member of tennis for 2 years, and Crusader Radio. Outside of school, he is a member of the Church of the Nazarene. After high school, Hudson plans to continue to expand his lawn care business, and possibly become a sports broadcaster. Hudson was escorted by Duchess candidate Kasiah Richmond.


Jack Wright is the son of Julie Zeka and Brett Wright. He is the grandson of Pat and Robert Zeka, and Chris and Bob Wright. He is the brother of Berkeley, Elle, and Vivienne Wright. Jack has been a member of basketball for 4 years, tennis for 4 years, football for 3 years, and cross country for 1 year. Outside of school, he plays summer basketball for Hunt United, and is a member of Saint Anthony-Saint Rose Catholic Church. He has received honors including 2nd team all-league football, Wichita Eagle honorable mention all-state football, 2x honorable mention all-league basketball, and is a 2x tennis state qualifier. His future plans are to attend the University of Kansas and major in exercise science. Jack was escorted by Duchess candidate Jordyn Brown.

 

The child attendants for Winter Homecoming were Riggs Erber and Juliana Newman, who were escorted by seniors Malachi Rogers and Hayden Brown.
