WHS Boys Cross Country Team Competes at 4A State Meet

It was a big day at WAMEGO COUNTRY CLUB in Wamego Saturday - for the first time since 1989, the Crusader Boys Cross Country Team competed, as a TEAM! (Camden Parkey, Braeden Ybarra, Hunter Lough, Ryan Bacon, Conner Walker, Caleb Sanders, and Jaxson Irey-Hurt.).

The course is a challenging one and MANY FOLKS were on hand for the 3A and 4A Boys and Girls 5K races. It was basically a mob. The top 20 individuals in each race medal and the top 3 teams receive plaques. The Crusaders didn't receive a plaque, and didn't have a finisher in the TOP 20, but they did accomplish this in 2021:

In the AVCTL DIV IV LEAGUE this season, Wellington was the ONLY "TEAM" to qualify for the State 3A/4A Meet @ Wamego. Andale didn't, Clearwater didn't, Mulvane didn't, Rose Hill didn't, and Wichita Collegiate didn't! It was a great season for the Crusaders.

Coaches Wallace and Green were present, Coach Showman
was in Wamego with the team on Friday, but was attending a funeral Saturday and couldn't attend. All 3 coaches are very well liked and respected. Following the race, Coach Wallace expressed his pleasure with the group. They ended up in 12th place, but each conquered the monster course, and 5 of the 7 will return to WHS, 4 as Seniors,1 as a Junior, for the 2022 season. Seniors Braeden Ybarra and Camden Parkey, will be missed by the underclassmen. They were leaders and appreciated by those they lead. Thank you to both for their "many" years of Cross Country and most importantly their dedication to the sport and to their underlings. The underclassmen are certainly better for it. Cross Country is a mental/physical grind. Those that participate are tough, Crusader tough, in both categories
