WHS has suspended summer athletic activities (psq, camps, individual workouts) for the next two weeks.

Study Shows Impact Afterschool Has on Reading

Recently, the Kansas Reading Roadmap (KRR) released a study of 9,000 children across 58 schools in Kansas that shows the impact that afterschool can have on early reading. Through a partnership with the Kansas Multi-Tiered System of Supports and Alignment (MTSS), the statistical analysis of individual student data found a strong correlation between afterschool intervention and grade-level reading based on school tests. For every day a child attended afterschool, his or her chances of reading at benchmark increased by 1.7%.

Supplemental tutoring outside the school day is considered essential for a reader that is behind. For example, the Center for American Progress prioritizes “provid[ing] a tutor for every child performing below grade level” as a recommendation to improve educational outcomes.

Unfortunately, low income families cannot pay for professional tutoring after school, and families in rural communities often lack any high-quality options regardless of the cost. Therefore, Kansas afterschool programs are the best way to receive MTSS-aligned tutoring services. School-based afterschool reading intervention is literally the only option in rural communities.
