"Don't Give Up - Don't Ever Give Up" - Finale at this school year's D.A.R.E. Graduation @ WHS

D.A.R.E. envisions a world in which students everywhere are empowered to respect others and choose to lead lives free from violence, substance abuse, and other dangerous behaviors.

The 2017-2018 D.A.R.E. Graduation was held Wednesday evening at WHS - 5th graders from across Wellington were honored and recognized for a myriad of accomplishments via the 10 week D.A.R.E. program and it's instructor, Wellington Police Officer / School Resource Officer Jim Yunker. This is Officer Yunker's 6th year at the helm. Congrats and thanks to him and all, for the fine and greatly needed program they perform.

With the WHS Student Mentors on stage to assist, Officer Yunker spoke with passion about D.A.R.E., what it means to the kids involved, what it means to him personally. Wellington students and students in literally thousands of schools across America and 52 other countries, use the D.A.R.E. curricula to address drugs, violence, bullying, internet safety, and other high risk circumstances today that are too often a part of students' lives. This comprehensive K-12 program was launched nationally in 1983.

Numerous 5th graders were individually awarded a variety of medals and prizes, from top candle seller (Lakin Brown) to the top 11 essay writers including the overall best essay written by Addie Hinshaw - a part of the program curricula requires each participant write an essay about D.A.R.E., what it means to them and how they feel it, and the subject matters it addresses, affect their lives now and in the foreseeable future. Nicholas Giefer received the Christian Miller Man of Steel Award!
